Sustainable tourism, the HEROST way
Sustainable tourism sounds complex, but our approach keeps it simple. We want tourism to create more benefits and fewer harms for everyone involved. We focus on real actions that improve people’s lives, protect places, and make travel more meaningful.
UN Tourism defines sustainable tourism as tourism that considers current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts and addresses the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities. For Millennium Destinations and HEROST, this definition becomes a practical guide we can apply to any form of tourism, not a niche label.
Our approach sees sustainable tourism as:
- A guiding framework for all types of tourism.
- A desirable business model for hosts and destinations.
- A community‑centric way to design and manage experiences.
- A positive lifestyle and mindset for travelers and tourism professionals.
Our vision: alignment, not trade‑offs
We believe that better tourism comes from alignment, not sacrifice. Our model aligns the needs, interests, and specific realities of all stakeholders:
- Visitors and travelers.
- Host communities and residents.
- Tourism workers and guides.
- Businesses and investors.
- Governments, DMOs, and public institutions.
- NGOs and development agencies.
This is the core of Millennium Destinations’ “meaningful, sustainable and inclusive tourism ecosystems” vision. All six stakeholder groups should gain real benefits and feel satisfied, instead of trading one interest against another. Sustainable tourism, in this sense, is not only about “less harm”; it is about creating shared value and pride.
Top‑down and bottom‑up together
Our sustainable tourism approach connects top‑down and bottom‑up efforts.
- Top‑down: policies, standards, strategies, and investments that set a supportive framework at national, regional, and local levels.
- Bottom‑up: community‑based tourism, local entrepreneurship, youth and women initiatives, and grassroots projects that grow from real needs and local ideas.
We work to make these two directions meet. Public frameworks become more inclusive and realistic. Community projects gain visibility, training, and market access. Sustainable tourism then becomes both a public agenda and a community‑driven movement.
Community‑centric and business‑smart
For us, “community‑centric” means putting people and places at the heart of decisions and benefits. This applies to homestays, eco‑lodges, boutique hotels, tour companies, wellness retreats, and entire destinations.
A sustainable tourism model makes business sense when it:
- Keeps more value in the destination and reduces leakage.
- Creates deeper relationships with guests and partners.
- Reduces risk from over‑dependence, overtourism, or reputation damage.
- Attracts partners, investors, and talent who care about impact.
Millennium Destinations and HEROST support hosts and destinations who choose this path. We help them translate values into clear practices, measurable progress, and engaging stories.
A positive lifestyle and mindset
Sustainable tourism also reflects how we think and feel about travel.
In the HEROST and Millennium Destinations ecosystem:
- Travelers look for meaning, connection, and fairness, not just checklists.
- Hosts feel proud of their work and their role in their community.
- Tourism professionals see themselves as stewards of places and relationships, not only as service providers.
This mindset invites people to choose “better, not more”: better value, better care, better connections. It turns tourism into a daily practice of responsibility and joy.
Co‑created experiences: “travel better, feel good, do good”
In our approach, every sustainable tourism experience is co‑created by hosts and travelers.
A growing number of travelers want to “travel good, feel good, do good”. They want fair jobs for local people, respectful contact with communities, and less damage to nature. Many hosts also want to welcome these guests, but they need visibility, tools, and support.
When hosts invest in sustainability, inclusion, and community benefit, they:
- Attract the right guests, who stay longer and spend more consciously.
- Build trust, loyalty, and positive word‑of‑mouth.
- Help tourism move from volume to value and from extractive to regenerative practices.
This is the kind of tourism HEROST exists to promote.
HEROST: the practical side of our model
HEROST is the online travel guide and toolkit created by Millennium Destinations to put this vision into practice. It promotes tourism experiences that seek a positive impact on people and the planet.
On HEROST, travelers can discover a variety of experiences including:
- Eco‑friendly and community‑based stays.
- Nature‑based and wellness activities.
- Cultural experiences and local workshops.
- Community initiatives and campaigns with real benefits for residents.
We feature many off‑the‑beaten‑path destinations to help disperse visitor flows and support lesser‑known places. Our work aligns with global agendas such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially decent work, reduced inequalities, inclusive communities, and responsible consumption and production.
A clear, concrete model against greenwashing
Our sustainable tourism model rejects vague claims. We focus on clear, transparent information and simple tools that build trust.
HEROST uses:
- An online platform that highlights experiences with specific positive actions and connects hosts and travelers who share similar values.
- A 10‑commitment Charter and a scoring system with 20 criteria inspired by GSTC standards, to make efforts visible and reduce greenwashing.
- Consulting, training, and capacity‑building services delivered by a global network of professionals.
- A strong focus on community‑based tourism, inclusive tourism ecosystems, and destinations that want to do better, not just “look green.”
This model is specific to Millennium Destinations and HEROST. It combines global frameworks with local realities, and big goals with practical steps.
HEROST Charter: 10 commitments in action
To turn ideas into action, each HEROST Host commits to:
- Quality hospitality – Offer safe, welcoming, high‑quality hospitality that respects local standards and regulations.
- Sustainability engagement – Apply sustainability practices and encourage responsible behavior from staff and guests.
- Cultural authenticity – Reflect local culture and traditions in architecture, design, food, and activities with respect and care.
- Responsible purchasing – Prioritize fair, local, and national products and services whenever possible.
- Support to local community – Create jobs and income for local people and support community initiatives.
- Water and energy saving – Monitor and manage water and energy use, and help keep these resources accessible to residents.
- Biodiversity and wildlife care – Support the conservation and, when possible, restoration of biodiversity and wildlife.
- Waste reduction and management – Sort, reduce, reuse, recycle, and upcycle waste, in partnership with the local community.
- Pollution minimization – Identify and reduce sources of pollution linked to the accommodation and activities.
- Climate action – Reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions linked to the accommodation and activities.
These commitments show guests, partners, and communities what hosts actually do, not only what they say.
